If you need a pdf editor, PDFit is an excellent choice. It's free and has the features of a paid alternative. In this article, I'll describe what it can do and why it's my favorite free pdf editor. PDFit is a wonderful tool that I use often - it lets me quickly edit my PDFs while I'm on the go, making it a great companion for iPad users who're using something like GoodReader to work on files they've downloaded from the web. PDFit is easy to use for beginners or those who have more experience with these types of programs - so everyone should be able to find ways to make PDFs easier to read on their devices. The first thing to consider is how you want to edit your PDF. If you want an app that will make annotations and notes on your PDFs, PDFit allows for this and is quite easy to use. The app is broken down into four main sections: files, pages, tools and help:
The files section features a great file browser that lets you quickly find your documents- it can search by title or content, and it includes a file inspector that looks through the metadata of the selected document. This lets you see more than just the title of the document - there's info here about where it came from as well as some hints as to how it was created (there's more about this under "Tools" below). When you select a document, it's added to your "Documents" list. This is where you'll find all documents you open, edit or create with PDFit, and it includes a full search function, making the editor easy to use because you can quickly find files. But what are these pages we keep talking about?
The pages section is where we get down to editing. When you select a document from the "Documents" list, it opens in the main page viewer - this is where all your editing will happen. There's some great tools here:
This tool makes editing and adding annotations very easy - just type in some text and press enter on your keyboard to add it to the document. But you can also use the "Clear" button to delete any text you've added. There's also a nice crop tool - it's easy to use, but the amount of control you have over it is limited by the size of your document. The "Preview" button shows you what your document will look like, giving you the ability to adjust width, height and other settings before adding your captioning. Once finished, select "Save" from this menu and your changes are written back to your document - or you can save right away with the click of a button. There's no "Undo" though, so be careful. PDFit also has a variety of tools in the Tools section - these are pared down compared to many other editors, but they are useful. You can rotate pages, change the size of the document or select all or part of a document with these. If you have text selected in your document when you perform one of these tasks, it'll be affected too - so if you want to choose just one page for example use this option. Finally there's help - this section is pretty self-explanatory, but it does have basic instructions for using PDFit that are nice to have when you're just getting started.
